Challenge

FirstService Residential (FSR) in Irvine, California is an industry-leading home owner association and community management company. In 2012, FSR decided to merge two of its offices and create a new California headquarters that would act as the corporate office for the Western region. Facilities Manager, Karyn Flores is in charge of logistics, relocation, as well as deciding the AV needs for the facility. The new headquarters gave her an opportunity to start fresh with all new AV, and she was ready for a change. “The old AV was so frustrating to use,” says Flores. “It must have been 20 years old and required constant maintenance. Every day we had to manually power on several individual systems and components and hope that everything worked.”

Solution

Flores consulted with Christina De Bono, President of ClearTech Media (CTM), to create solutions to AV needs throughout the new headquarters. “FirstService was looking for a reputable AV systems integrator that could provide easy-to-use AV systems that were relatively self-serviceable from an operations standpoint,” says Flores. She expressed her desire for a state-of-the art AV system for the presentation room that would be easy to use and installed at a reasonable price. She also wanted AV solutions for several small conference rooms, digital signage for the lobby and other open areas and sound masking throughout the facility. De Bono assured her that the days of babysitting the AV system and keeping her fingers crossed that everything would work properly would soon be over. She introduced Flores to Extron Electronics as a control solution and arranged a tour at a nearby university wherein CTM installed Extron control systems in twenty three classrooms and a distance learning center, providing Flores a hands-on demo of some Extron control products. After deciding on Extron as a control solution, Flores contracted CTM to design and install an AV system for FSR’s presentation room.

The presentation room is a large space, 26 feet by 62 feet, with configurable seating and table arrangements to accommodate the various activities within the room, such as training sessions, webinars, vendor fairs, and all-company meetings. CTM installed a ceiling-mounted 5,000 lumen WUXGA LCD projector, aimed at a 130” recessed tensioned electric screen to provide video image. To assist presenter speech, CTM installed a wireless microphone system, including both handheld and lapel microphones to accommodate presenter preference. Program and presenter audio is provided by sixteen ceiling speakers installed throughout the room for optimal sound distribution. CTM installed a digital sound processor to provide audioconferencing capability and background music. The AV system is controlled by an Extron Touchlink touchpanel. The touchpanel gives the presenter full control over the projection screen, video source selection, audioconferencing dialing and program and presenter audio levels. When not in use, the touchpanel tucks away neatly into an enclosure housed in a custom multimedia presenter lectern. The lectern also houses a PC with monitor, Blu-ray player and gooseneck microphone for audioconferencing, as well as HDMI and VGA connections for presenter convenience.

CTM installed digital signage systems in the lobby and three other open areas throughout FSR’s new headquarters. The digital signage displays provide content created by the client as well as television feeds. CTM also installed wall-mounted displays in the HR room, the employee break room and several small conference rooms, along with HDMI and VGA connections for BYOD connectivity. Sound masking is distributed throughout the facility by one hundred eighty ceiling speakers to prevent conversation noise from travelling too far.

Outcome

CTM delivered on its promise to meet each of the client’s needs audiovisual needs in their new headquarters. FSR had clear goals in mind for their audiovisual systems and CTM designed and installed a solution that perfectly achieved their goals. Lauding over the performance of the presentation room AV system, Karyn Flores explained, “After several months of using this presentation room, we’re still amazed at the simplicity and powerful features in this AV system.” The staff at FSR is very pleased to have powerful, reliable and easy-to-use AV systems throughout their facility. Echoing this sentiment, Flores exclaimed, “…it’s so great to have our AV work reliably every single time we use it. We couldn’t be happier.”
